The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Players will gain the right to challenge particular rulings made by the chair umpire, following the system already in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
This technology will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This development comes just a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine specific situations, including:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
- Possible interference end of a point.
Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.
Case in Point
A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.
Other Changes
A further change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was in or out.
In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
