Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank cut borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, including the count of new jobs created to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its release once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are going up, although gradually. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
