The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
